The American Stroke Association is the division of the American Heart Association that is solely focused on reducing disability and death from stroke. This comprehensive site includes a wealth of patient-friendly information and resources.

The National Stroke Association focuses on lowering the incidence and impact of stroke.
Go to this site for general information on stroke plus specific facts for women, African Americans, and children. The site also includes information for stroke survivors, family members, and healthcare providers.

This site is sponsored by the Society for Vascular Surgery. Although designed mainly for healthcare providers, it includes information for the general public on vascular disease, tests, and treatments, plus facts on Medicare benefits and a “Find a Vascular Specialist” feature.

ClinicalTrials.gov provides updated information about federally and privately supported clinical research, including the purpose of a trial, locations, and who may enroll.

CenterWatch.com is an open resource for patients interested in participating in clinical trials. The site offers information about clinical research and listings of active industry- and government-sponsored clinical trials.


Carotid stenting is not currently approved by the FDA for asymptomatic patients who are at standard risk for surgery.
